Nourishing the Planet

Packaging

We’re constantly investigating ways to decrease the virgin materials used in our packaging to reduce landfill waste and lighten our impact on the planet.

Plastics

Plastics are a small part of our packaging profile, but nevertheless, we have goals to reduce the amount of virgin plastic we source and the amount of single use plastics that end up in the landfill.

Since 2009, we have been reducing our use of plastics and metal through the lightweighting of our packaging. We are currently testing a compostable fruit cup using bioplastics. Additionally, we are evaluating a fruit cup containing post-consumer recycled content. In fiscal 2023, we began incorporating post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic in the manufacturing of our JOYBA® beverage cups. We’ve also begun storage studies on fruit cups made with PCR and continue to look for other opportunities to incorporate PCR and other recycled materials into our packaging.

Recycling Steel

Steel makes up the largest part of our packaging portfolio, and we work closely with our steel can supplier on steel sustainability. The majority of our products come in steel cans, which are recyclable. We continue efforts to minimize greenhouse gas impact by optimizing our metal containers. This typically takes several years to complete, as it’s critical to prove that any changes made to the container won’t be detrimental to the food or the quality of the container.

Consumer Education

As members of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition® and Consumer Brands Association, we advocate for improving recycling infrastructure and exploring new packaging options that are more widely recyclable and use a higher proportion of recycled content.
